Gae Aulenti: mito, piazza, doodle

I couldn't ignore this Google Doodle - not only because I really like them as you all know, but especially because it's dedicated to Gae Aulenti. Did you know that the main square of the new Porta Nuova district in Milan has been named after her (Piazza Gae Aulenti)?! I love to go up there for a walk and to read a nice book on a Summer evening and I can't wait for it to be completely finished. I really advise you to go there and have a look, enjoying everything, from design, art, innovation and technology to romance, charme and also a kind of magic. :)

Valerio Massimo Manfredi at Bocconi University

Carissimi!

My absence has been far too long and I’m definitely inexcusable, but now I’m back again! I hope you’re  all doing fine! :) I also hope, that you can forgive me with this post about the famous Italian historian and novelist Valerio Massimo Manfredi, who has been guest speaker at Bocconi University thanks to the Literary Association Bocconi d’Inchiostro. It has been an absolutely interesting event and I must say he is not only very cultured, but also a really open and sociable person. Indeed, it has been a wonderful afternoon!

Dear all, today I'm going to tell you about a wonderful event of yesterday evening at the Rocca Costanza in Pesaro: the first concert of "Interludio - momenti di Adriatica quiete" took place, with the world famous Chinese pianist Jin Ju (who was even invited to play for pope Benedict XVI, a real classical music expert, in 2009!). She played the Piano Concert No. 1 by Tchaikovsky. I really advise you to listent to the concert (a different version below), because it is very beautiful!
P.S.: The ROF (the Rossini Opera Festival, about which I wrote also last year HERE), dedicated to the great composer Gioachino Rossini, is going to start very soon in Pesaro. I've heard that every night is almost already sold out, but if you come to Pesaro you can still give it a try, since it is worth it!

Please pardon me for my long long absence!! It's not going to happen anymore! But the good news is I didn't stand there twiddling my thumbs and have (interesting!) news I'll share very soon with you. Moreover, today there is a wonderful Google Doodle, which is dedicated to great Franz Kafka (for his 130. birthday anniversary), and I definitely couldn't miss it. And what kind of news do you have?

Susanna Tamaro at Bocconi University

I beg your pardon for having been absent for such a long time, but it was worth it: last Monday the world-renowned Italian writer Susanna Tamaro (author of “Follow your heart”) has been to Milan’s BocconiUniversity and was interviewed by the literary association. It was a really interesting meeting, since Susanna Tamaro talked very freely and answered each question with enthusiasm. The interview’s focus has been her latest autobiography (“Ogni angelo è tremendo”) and hence her own life as a whole. I’ve been very positively surprised by the openness and simplicity (not banality!) she told the audience about herself, her ideas, and her attitudes towards life. It is always a great experience to know writers as persons and to discover that they have managed to remain human beings despite their success. Below some pictures of the “conference” and a short video (in Italian).

Cascataci in pieno, complimenti a me!!

I was watching the news on April 1st when I heard about all the April fools' jokes that have been played via web this year (many of them being really cool!), even by big companies like Twitter (saying they were going to charge vowels) or YouTube (making an announcement that the popular video sharing web site was shutting down), and many others. The news said that these jokes were aimed at "today's customers, who are always keen on discovering the latest technology, but very absent-minded with respect to the calender...". And my first thought was: that's so true! Come on, you can't but think it's an April fools' joke! :-) Do you know what happened next? At night I found an online Google ad about the brand new Google Nose, a program allowing you to search for smells and to smell your own results by moving closer to the screen with your nose (still a beta version). Moral of the story: my nose was almost smeared on the screen and I was wondering why I wasn't smelling anything (am I all stuffed up? maybe the beta version isn't working... maybe my laptop isn't working! these cool technological stuff never works when I try it...), and didn't even think about an April fools' joke. Taken, congrats to me!! :-D And you? Tell me something about your April fools' jokes (either played or suffered)!

Guardatela QUI. :-)

I use 2011's father's day Google Doodle to wish all daddies - and especially to mine - a lovely father's day! P.S.: Do you remember the version of 2012? Have a look at it HERE. :-)

Oz the great and powerful

I went to the movies yesterday and watched Oz the great and powerful (Disney). I must say, I really liked it and think James Franco was absolutely impressive in the role of a self-centered and tombeur des femmes Oz wizard. However, one aspect of the plot didn't convince me 100% (probably a very banaland obvious one), but I'm not going to tell you about it now, since I'd probably reveal too much in advance if you haven't watched the movie already! Maybe you're going to find out what it is about! :-) In any case, I advise you to watch it and of course tell me what you think about it!

Happy 1st birthday The Cat's Edge!

What else?

I can’t believe The Cat’s Edge is one year old! You can’t imagine how happy I am! :-) Twelve months ago this was a new experience, which I started with engagement and curiosity, prone to make something good out of it… but results went far beyond my expectations and I couldn’t be more thankful and grateful, especially to you all, who made and make this "dream" real. This is a space where I can share what really matters to me: literature and marketing, seen from a broader perspective! And I’m really glad to see that someone who is interested in what I’m doing and is spending time to visit my blog on a regular base. But let’s remember together what happened this year:

The Cat’s Edge collected more than 18.800 views

Until now it has 158 followers with GFC and about 100 not registered regular readers

Until now @laura_mint, my Twitter account of the blog, has 181 followers (follow me if you are not already part of the crew! :-))

The Cat’s Edge won 18 awards (amazing… I can’t believe it!)

I was “author of the day” on it.paperblog.com on July, 3.-4. 2012

I was invited to write a guest post on the fashion blog "Fashion Tea at Five" by Mary

I was interviewed by a school newspaper (you'll to find out more about this soon :-))

I won the novel "I am Heathcliffe" through a giveaway (lucky lucky lucky!)

I receive at least one e-mail a week from someone who tells me to appreciate my blog (I’m really moved by these messages, believe me!)

... and especially The Cat’s Edge can count on many loyal and kind readers, who always come to say hello and to leave an interesting comment!
What else? I can only say thank you to you again and hope you are going to read The Cat’s Edge also in the future, because many surprises are waiting for you, wait and see. :-)

P.S.: Today is also my Mum's birthday!! Happy birthday Mum, I love you so much! :-)

P.P.S.: Below you can find the first surprise: the TOP FIVE of the most read posts of this year. Do you guess which they are before checking them out? :-) Did you leave a comment for each of them? ;-)

What else?

An award for my birthday

My birthday was on February :-) , 15 and I couldn't get a better present than an award for The Cat's Edge from Il Principe Ranocchio (a great blog about bon ton and many interesting topics). I'd like to pass the award to other 3 blogs having less than 200 followers and which really deserve it:

Enjoy! J

Valentine's Day is coming and this reminded me of a funny video by Bruno Bozzetto about differences and stereotypes between men and women. Enjoy! J

A voi quali piacciono? Vi auguro una buona giornata!

A few days a go I got mails from some of you, asking me to post something about movies and cinema again: here you are, I share with you the top "sixteen" (I didn't make it to a "fifteen"!) of my favorite movies (I already told you about some of them HERE and HERE)! They are very different from each other, but each of them captured me in its own way. Which ones do you like? I wish you a nice day!

Welche Filme gefallen euch? Ich wünsche euch einen schönen Tag!

Italy in 150 years

As you already know, I have a passion for Google Doodles and think they are always fascinating. When I talked to a friend recently, I discovered that I missed a very important one: when the 150th anniversary of the Italian Unification was celebrated in 2011, an artistic competition aiming to represent “Italy in 150 years” in a Doodle took place among Italian pupils and students. The absolute winner was the picture you can see above, called “Going ahead with energy” and realized by an elementary school in the Marche region. I think the Doodle is and should be definitely inspiring for the coming years, congrats to the winners!

Here I am, talking again about a topic which I really wanted to share with you. Did you ever want to dare to do something different, but then gave up because you were afraid to “denaturalize” yourself? I think this has happened at least once to all of us and we have all questioned ourselves: “what is going to happen if others watch me reading that kind of book on the train?”, “I can’t like classic ballet if I am a rock soul!”, “I like animalier style, but I definitely don’t feel comfy with it…”, “if I don’t own a motorbike and don’t like them either, why do I get lost in the window with those black biker boots?”, etc. We usually work hard on our image in order to make it coherent with our personality and interests and which allows us to feel comfortable also with others. That’s perfectly right, but shouldn’t become a limit to try things we could be interested in. I think the key is to dare without exaggerations. Let’s take fashion for instance: we don’t necessarily have to like or dislike a trend, but we can appreciate it in small portions. In fact it is enough to choose a pair of nice original boots to complete our look with something new, but discretional at the same time. Why boots? Well, metaphorically they represent the “first step”! J For this reason I’d like to share with you my selection of some fabulous boots from the great website Asos. I really recommend you to visit it and to follow the post’s title, which means “dare with Asos” in Italian (I’m sure you’ll have noticed the pun)! J

I’d like to dedicate my first post of 2013 (I really wish you all the best for the new year!) to a topic which is very important to me and it’s now a long time I wanted to talk about it. You already know my taste in terms of literature and will have noticed that I particularly enjoy everything dealing with 18th and 19th century English literature. J I have written several times about Jane Austen (click HERE and HERE to read some of my previous posts about her), but there are also other authors I love, like Charlotte and Emily Brontë. The two English sisters (together with Anne, the third one) and their most famous novels, Charlotte’s “Jane Eyre” and Emily’s “Wuthering Heights” are well known by everyone (those who did not read them, have watched the movies, those who didn’t watch the movies have at least heard something about them, and those who don’t want to hear anything about them, usually have a girlfriend/wife/daughter who is mad about them J). But the question is: Charlotte or Emily? If the critics seem to have chosen Emily (defining her novel a “masterpiece” and the one of the sister nothing more than a “classic”), the readers’ judgment is not that unanimous. I definitely don’t want to start a bloody competition between the two sisters (I’m pretty sure they’d be the first ones to dislike it), but I’m curious to know your opinion about it. Both novels belong to my favorites, but I would probably vote for Charlotte. In my opinion Jane Eyre is a wonderful character and not only because of her innovativeness (since she admits openly to be in love with a married man -  and in those days, in the Victorian Age, women were considered to have almost the same feelings and desires of a colander). The main reason why I like her so much is that Charlotte had to novelize her life in order to get accepted by readers and editors (her first attempt to describe her own love to a married man in “The Professor” was refused at first), she had to make a greater effort, putting together both her real and her imagined life to talk about herself to the world. I can’t imagine a harder job, but at the same time a more fascinating one.
